I have been blessed to have been a part of the New Haven Spring Conference since the first annual.  I am grateful that I have a sponsor who has carried on the A.A. legacy, Unity, Recovery and Service and who has handed down that legacy to me.  I will never forget the feeling I had in that room filled with other recovering alcoholics.  Nothing gave me more pleasure than to stand there in awe of the entire event.

I am newly sober and this was my first conference. I joined the planning committee early on and took on quite a lot of responsibility as a newbie with the careful guidance and encouragement of a wonderful sponsor. I am blessed enough to have a sponsor who believes in the power of service and she passed that gift on to me. As much as I hemmed and hawed about how much there was for me to do and how I wasn't sure I could handle the stress of all of my responsibilities relating to this event, and as much as I worried that my first event would be spent running around like a chicken with my head cut off, in the end I am SOOOOOO grateful for all of it.

Why Attend?

This is the question I asked myself before attending my first conference. Why is usually the first thing that comes into my head whenever I do something that I did not think of myself. Because if I did ot think of it than it must not make very good sense.

Why Why Why!!! When I ponder on the why I usually talk myself out of things before long. The one thing I am greatful for in my relapse in AA is that I understand now that it does not really matter what I think when it comes to my sobriety. People have already made all the mistakes I could ever make. All I have to do is listen and look carefully at people coming in, going and staying in AA.

I was a "newbie" to AA and fresh out of rehab last year almost to the date.  I became a regular to the 7:30 a.m. Guilford meetings and there was a lot of talk about the New Haven Spring Conference in the meetings.  I had never heard of it and dared not ask, for not wanting to seem ignorant.  A lot of members from the Guilford meeting were volunteering for it.

I have learned the hard way that the program of AA is and must be a program of action. The actions we must take when we get to Alcoholics Anonymous are clear because we are usually very scared and with not a lot of options or answers.

I ended up in rehab after not having any more  answers and just sick of my life. I must say that I was willing and gladly welcomed any changes that could make some sense of my life and what had happened. Even the things that I did not really agree with, I was not willing to discount out of fear of relapse. So, getting a sponsor and attending meeting was no problem for me.
