Angels From Al-Anon

When I got the opportunity to meet Linda, I got my first appreciation of the love and recovery our sister organization has to offer. She told me how their group meets in Westchester and NYC. Linda appeared to be the grand sponsor of this group and she came with several generations of Al-anons.

Let me tell you that they came not empty handed or unwilling, but totally ready to serve and become an intricate part of the conference. First, they brought enough baked goods to last the entire weekend, home cooked with thoughtful love and care. There were Lois's Slipper's Cookies, 12-Step Cookies and Cakes.

Now let me tell you why I say they are Angels. Linda told me that this group of Al-anon ladies went on regular road trips for weekend fellowship and service. These are not like planned vacations, they're fellowship and service opportunities, which some might call work. The women would be asked to show up for their fellowship weekend, meet at a certain place, and go wherever without knowing the destination. This approach brings the words "trust in God & service" to a whole new meaning to me. They're dedication to this process was outstanding. While speaking with Linda, I can't tell you how many times the girls would come to her and ask what's next, ready to serve. It was a beautiful thing.

After the conference I was so impressed I brought to the wrap up meeting the idea to make the conference a AA & Al-anon joint conference. We may be ready for our first Afro-American President, but this concept was too complex for our committee.

I thank God for the gift I recieved from being present and experiencing these Angels.
